IHSM Successfully Hosted an International Scientific and Practical Conference on Infectious Diseases and Food Safety
The International Higher School of Medicine (IHSM), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health of the Kyrgyz Republic, the National Institute of Public Health, the I.K. Akhunbaev Kyrgyz State Medical Academy, and the Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University, successfully hosted the International Scientific and Practical Conference “Current Challenges in Infectious and Food Safety: Integration of Science, Clinical Practice, and Partnership” on 16–18 April 2026 in Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic.
The conference brought together researchers, clinicians, public health professionals, policymakers, educators, and international experts to discuss emerging public health challenges and strengthen international cooperation in healthcare, medical education, and research. The event served as a valuable platform for the exchange of scientific knowledge, clinical experience, and innovative approaches to addressing infectious diseases, biological threats, and food safety.
A major focus of this year’s conference was food safety, recognizing its growing importance as a fundamental component of public health and sustainable development. Scientific sessions addressed contemporary challenges in ensuring food quality and safety, preventing foodborne diseases, strengthening food surveillance systems, and promoting evidence-based approaches to food safety management. Participants emphasized that effective food safety requires close collaboration between healthcare professionals, researchers, educators, regulatory authorities, and the food industry.
Special attention was given to the relationship between nutrition and health, highlighting the role of safe and nutritious food in preventing infectious and non-communicable diseases, reducing micronutrient deficiencies, and improving the health of vulnerable populations. Experts discussed current challenges related to food security, quality control, and public awareness, stressing the importance of multidisciplinary and international cooperation in addressing these issues.
An important contribution to the food safety program was made by the faculty members of the International Higher School of Medicine (IHSM), who are members of the Erasmus+ BERNICA project. During the conference, the BERNICA team presented the project's objectives and shared its initial achievements, highlighting its role in strengthening higher education capacity in food safety, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration, and aligning educational programs with international standards. Their presentation demonstrated how the project contributed to the development of innovative educational approaches and supported the preparation of future healthcare professionals capable of addressing contemporary food safety challenges through research, innovation, and international cooperation.
The conference successfully strengthened international academic and scientific cooperation while promoting dialogue on current public health priorities. It highlighted the essential role of interdisciplinary research, evidence-based education, and global partnerships in addressing infectious diseases and ensuring food safety. The outcomes of the conference are expected to contribute to future collaborative research initiatives, educational development, and policy-making efforts aimed at improving population health both within the region and internationally.
